Wedding Budget 101: What Couples Actually Spend (And Where to Save)

Where wedding budgets actually go, what's negotiable, and the categories most couples underestimate.

Wedding budgets fail for a predictable reason: couples price out the fun categories first and let the boring-but-mandatory ones come as a surprise later.

The categories that reliably take the biggest share: venue and catering together typically account for close to half of most wedding budgets, since catering is priced per guest — the fastest way to move your total budget is adjusting guest count, not shopping harder within a fixed list.

The categories couples most often underestimate: service charges and gratuities on top of quoted prices (often 20–25% on top of the subtotal), alterations, day-of coordination, and transportation for a multi-venue day.

Where it's genuinely reasonable to save: invitations and paper goods, favors, and an open bar for the full event length versus a well-chosen limited bar.

Where saving usually backfires: photography (the most commonly regretted budget cut), and cutting catering per-head so much that food quality visibly drops.

A simple sequencing rule: lock guest count first, then venue and catering, then photography, then everything else.
